AFTERCARE

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals well and looks vibrant for years to come. At Astoria Ink, we want to provide you with the tools and knowledge needed to protect your new tattoo and promote healing. Follow these steps and tips to ensure the best outcome.

Initial Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)

  • Keep the Bandage On: Your tattoo artist will apply a protective bandage or wrap after your session. Leave it on for the recommended amount of time to protect your tattoo from bacteria and dirt.

  • Wash Your Tattoo Gently: After removing the wrap, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use clean hands—do not use a washcloth or sponge.

  • Pat the area dry with a clean, soft towel or let it air dry: Once your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of aftercare. Avoid over-applying; your tattoo should not look greasy.

    Ongoing Care (Days 3-14)

  • Moisturize Regularly: Keep your tattoo moisturized. Avoid heavy creams that can clog pores.

  • Avoid Picking or Scratching: Your tattoo may scab or peel as it heals—this is normal. Do not pick at scabs or scratch the area, as this can cause scarring and patchy healing.

  • Keep It Clean: Gently wash your tattoo once or twice a day with mild soap and water. Avoid soaking the tattoo in water (no baths, swimming, or hot tubs).

  • Protect It from the Sun: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight during the healing process.

  • Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation and rubbing against the tattooed area.

What to Avoid During Healing

  • Swimming: Avoid pools, hot tubs, oceans, or lakes for at least two weeks.

  • Excessive Sweating: Minimize heavy exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating, especially if the tattoo is in a high-friction area.

  • Harsh Products: Avoid alcohol-based products, exfoliants, or scented lotions on your tattoo.

  • Direct Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo covered or in the shade during healing.

Signs of Proper Healing

  • Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness during the first few days.

  • Peeling, scabbing or flaking of the skin, similar to a mild sunburn.

  • Slight itching (do not scratch).
